Thoughts from GITEX 2023

Hi there, It’s James Toulman kicking off our first series of articles and insights from Vorcis.

What better way to start than reflecting on an exhilarating week at GITEX GLOBAL 2023, marking The Year to Imagine AI in Everything.

GITEX Global brings together the world’s most innovative enterprises and best minds to elevate business, economy, society and culture. I’m inspired by the boundless potential of AI and other emerging technologies on display. The palpable energy and enthusiasm in the air signify that we stand on the brink of a transformative technological revolution.

Yet, amid this excitement, I can’t help but ponder a crucial yet often overlooked challenge – the need for a solid foundation for adopting these cutting-edge technologies. As a leader in a Dubai-based tech consultancy, I’m keenly aware of the immense potential in our regional market, but also the hurdles we face.

Foundations for Digital Transformation

The truth is, advanced technologies like AI require a sturdy base – a resilient and well-prepared digital infrastructure. While GITEX was truly inspiring, it highlights that we’re still grappling with fundamental issues in our region, which must be addressed to fully harness the potential of these innovations.

One particular concern is that many organisations in our region have embarked on their cloud journeys, a vital step indeed. However, some have not adhered to a well-conceived or consistently updated cloud strategy. The cloud is the cornerstone for most emerging technologies in our region, making a well-structured cloud strategy paramount.

Why have a Cloud Strategy?

A robust cloud strategy is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures alignment with an organisation’s business objectives, not just transferring data and applications to the cloud but doing so with a clear purpose that bolsters the mission and vision. This alignment is crucial, especially for technologies that rely on the scalability and flexibility of the cloud.

Secondly, a well-crafted cloud strategy emphasises security and data governance. In a time where data is more crucial than ever, safeguarding it and ensuring compliance with regulations is paramount. Without a robust strategy, the risk of data breaches and compliance issues surges, potentially hindering the integration of emerging technology.

Furthermore, a cloud strategy should be adaptable, adjusting to the rapidly changing tech landscape. Emerging technologies are continuously pushing boundaries, and a stagnant cloud strategy can suppress innovation and hinder harnessing these technologies fully.

Moreover, the need for agile digital strategies is vital to navigate the evolving terrain of emerging technologies. Measurable roadmaps are crucial for achieving digital transformation goals, ensuring every effort contributes to a larger, purpose-driven journey.

The Trust Issue

Comprehensive cybersecurity measures are non-negotiable. As we embrace the interconnected realm of AI and IoT, robust cybersecurity is indispensable to safeguard sensitive data and maintain trust.

The path to successful implementation of AI and emerging technology is about building foundational elements first. This means investing in digital education, reinforcing data privacy and security, and collaborating to create an ecosystem for innovation.

Setting the Edge for Dubai Business Leaders

In Dubai, we have a unique opportunity to establish ourselves as a regional tech hub. GITEX showcases our potential, but it all starts with a commitment to building the foundations of success. While GITEX’s enthusiasm is infectious, remember that a strong base is the linchpin for sustainable progress. Let’s collaborate to ensure our region is not just enthusiastic about the future but also thoroughly prepared to embrace it with agile digital strategies, well-defined roadmaps, comprehensive cybersecurity, and a robust cloud infrastructure.
